2023 MathBioU: Summer Research Program for Undergraduates
MathBioU is a summer research program in mathematical biology for undergraduate students to be held in person format from 06/27/2023 to 08/04/2023, at UC Irvine.
Students will work in pairs with a PI in a computational biology research project. In addition, there will be weekly activities in skills development, including how to give presentations, or how to write mathematics using a computer program. By the end of the project the students will give a presentation about their research and submit a paper on their work.
Students will receive a stipend of $500/week, or a total of $3,000 to help cover living expenses during this time.
Participation in MathBioU will not only provide a window into a career in research and academia, but also significantly strengthen applications for graduate school. Students will be able to describe in detail their previous research experience and results in application essays, and letters of recommendation will be much more elaborate since students will spend significant time working with faculty members.
Eligibility: This program is open to all registered undergraduates in universities across the United States. Students must still be enrolled in their programs during summer 2023 in order to be eligible. Only US citizens and permanent residents are eligible to receive the stipend, and they will be given preference although international students registered in US universities will also be considered. Students should have excellent GPA and ideally be finishing their junior year, although students in their sophomore year are also considered. Special consideration will also be given to diversity, first generation, and female students, as well as students with disabilities.
Applications for MathBioU will be accepted until the application deadline of Friday, 03/03/2023. Accepted students will be notified of their status by Friday, 03/10/2023.
